The Milwaukee Bucks have traded two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat. This marks the end of an era in Milwaukee, where Antetokounmpo led the team to its first NBA championship in 50 years.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Miami Heat will receive Antetokounmpo and Portis in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis. Additionally, the Bucks will receive three future first-round picks, the No. 13 pick in the upcoming draft, a future pick swap, and a second-round pick.
The Boston Celtics and Miami Heat were frontrunners in pursuing Giannis before this trade, especially as the NBA Draft approached.
The decision to trade Giannis comes after Milwaukee experienced uncertainty following the departure of championship-winning coach Mike Budenholzer in 2023. The Bucks have struggled, eventually missing the 2026 playoffs.
Giannis, 31, won a championship for Milwaukee in 2021. His contributions to the team have earned him two MVP awards and a spot among the NBA’s top 75 players of all time. Despite his achievements, recent seasons have seen the Bucks falter, with injuries affecting Giannis’ performance in the 2025-26 season. The team decided to rest him against his wishes toward the season’s end.
Instead of maintaining a costly roster with limited flexibility, Milwaukee chose to leverage Antetokounmpo’s trade value.
The Miami Heat’s acquisition of Giannis reflects President Pat Riley’s determination to secure another championship. This trade represents a significant step in his ongoing efforts to bolster the team by trading future assets for immediate star power.
