ABC’s show “The View” recently experienced a surge in viewership after booking Vice President JD Vance. Vance’s appearance drew 3.3 million viewers, marking the highest audience in over 18 months. This increase came despite ongoing debates about whether “The View” qualifies as a bona fide news program under Federal Communications Commission (FCC) standards.
FCC Investigation
The FCC launched an investigation into “The View” as part of an effort to enforce equal time for political candidates. This action followed Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico’s appearance on the show. Disney’s ABC maintains that “The View” functions as bona fide news, which would exempt it from the equal time rule.
ABC has initiated a campaign urging support for the show. A commercial debuted during “The View,” inviting viewers to tell the FCC to allow the program to remain unchanged. The campaign will also run online and across ABC social media platforms.
Media Research Center’s Critique
The Media Research Center (MRC) has contested the news status of “The View,” submitting a letter to the FCC. The letter argues that the show promotes a single political viewpoint, making it ineligible for the bona fide news exemption. The MRC cited 2,473 instances of perceived bias as evidence.
MRC President David Bozell commented, “Anyone who watches the show knows it’s political advocacy masquerading as news… ABC should not receive special regulatory treatment intended for bona fide news programs.”
ABC’s Response and FCC’s Stance
ABC has pushed back against the FCC probe, calling it a potential threat to the First Amendment. The network argues that interference in program scheduling limits editorial discretion.
The FCC’s stance is firm. It claims that no evidence has been presented to support granting “The View” an exemption and that the network must adhere to the Communications Act of 1934’s requirements for equal opportunities.
Political Representation on “The View”
“The View” has traditionally been critical of Donald Trump and his administration. In 2025, the show hosted 341 guests, only two of whom were conservative. This disparity highlights concerns about balanced representation.
It remains uncertain if the success of Vance’s appearance will encourage more Republicans to participate. Meanwhile, the debate continues over whether “The View” should be regulated as a news program.
