New York’s primary election day is seen as a significant moment for the Democratic Party. Democratic Socialists, including Zohran Mamdani, actively campaign for progressive candidates. Among these candidates, Claire Valdez, Darieliza Avila Chevalier, and Brad Lander support policies like Medicare for All and the abolition of ICE.
The political scene in New York also includes controversy around Congressman Dan Goldman. A Brooklyn coffee shop banned him due to his pro-Israel stance, which leads to a civil rights investigation.
Claire Valdez, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 7th Congressional District, faces criticism after an old podcast clip re-emerged. In the clip, she suggests abolishing TSA PreCheck and nationalizing the airline industry. She expressed her views on a May episode of “Candidate Corner” with Francesca Fiorentini. The clip gained attention after her primary win over Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and other contenders.
“My hot take is we need to abolish PreCheck. I’ve got, like, a million beefs with the airline industry and the process of having to fly,” Valdez said.
Marc Molinaro, a former New York Congressman, criticizes Valdez’s proposals.
“We’ve reached the point where NY socialist Democrats think making airport security worse & lines longer somehow makes America better,” Molinaro said.
Tré Easton, a former staffer for Sen. John Fetterman, also commented on the issue.
“You can take my TSA pre-check from my cold, dead, security theater loving hands,” Easton remarked.
David J. Bier from the Cato Institute argues that nationalizing industries would put them under current administrations’ control.
“If we nationalize industries, it means putting Donald Trump in charge of those industries,” Bier warned.
Gary Leff, a travel writer, highlights the importance of PreCheck for effective security.
“She doesn’t want to abolish TSA, she just wants to abolish PreCheck, which helps focus on actual threats,” Leff said.
Valdez argues that her proposals aim to address airline profits and passenger rights. She highlights issues with high fares, added fees, and perceived weak consumer protections.
Valdez’s campaign platform calls for shifting federal funding from roads to public transit, walking, and biking. Her platform does not mention abolishing PreCheck or nationalizing airlines.
