Michael Jackson Biopic ‘Michael’ Reaches Box Office Milestone

Michael Jackson, known as the King of Pop, has also claimed the title of the King of the box office. Nearly two decades since his passing, his biopic, Michael, is making history by approaching the $1 billion mark at the box office. Recent reports indicate that Michael has become the highest-grossing biopic of all time, surpassing Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning 2023 film Oppenheimer.

Since its release on April 24, Michael has earned $977 million, overtaking Oppenheimer‘s lifetime earnings of $975 million. In third place is Queen’s 2018 biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, with a total of $911 million. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael showcases the life of the popstar from his days with the Jackson 5 to his reign as a global icon. Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s real-life nephew, plays the legendary artist in the film, while Colman Domingo and Nia Long depict his parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson.

Despite impressive box office numbers, the film received moderate reviews from critics. The Tomatometer rates Michael at 38%, but Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter, reflecting audience ratings, gives the film a glowing 97%. Fans expressed their enthusiasm, acknowledging Michael’s lasting influence and popularity.

“It was only a matter of time. The King of Pop 👑,” commented one fan, highlighting the ongoing adoration for Jackson’s legacy. Another fan said, “Seventeen years gone and Michael Jackson is still releasing number ones 😂.”

While the film holds a PG-13 rating compared to Oppenheimer‘s R rating, the significance of the biopic is undeniable. Michael debuted with $97 million in the domestic market and $217 million internationally. Despite attracting criticism for not addressing contentious elements of Jackson’s life, the biopic is well on its way to grossing $1 billion.

Oppenheimer received recognition in the 96th Academy Awards, earning seven out of 13 nominations. These included Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Best Picture.
