U.S. officials have labeled María Corina Machado’s attempt to return to Venezuela as a distraction. Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, intends to aid in earthquake recovery efforts but faces opposition from the Trump administration, calling her actions a ‘political stunt.’
Since her announcement, the Trump administration has consistently denied her request to return. This decision has led to increased tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela’s most popular politician, according to sources familiar with the situation. There is uncertainty about whether Machado can mend her relationship with the U.S.
Machado once had strong ties with Washington’s Republican leaders. Her opposition group claimed victory in the 2024 presidential election, despite allegations of manipulation and voter suppression by the Venezuelan government. Maduro, Venezuela’s leader, was ousted earlier this year by U.S. forces.
Machado risks retaliation from Venezuela’s security forces if she returns. She has failed to convince Mr. Trump of her political influence in Venezuela, a country he has called his significant foreign policy achievement in his second term.
Even a gesture like gifting her Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump, despite the prize committee’s objections, hasn’t changed Trump’s stance. Machado fled Venezuela last year after winning the Peace Prize and has been unable to return since.
