2 hours ago 0

Amidst the aftermath of Venezuela’s devastating earthquakes, emergency teams from California, Virginia, and Florida collaborate with local workers to locate and rescue survivors.

Members of the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue team from Virginia joined efforts in La Guaira, Venezuela, to search through the debris of a collapsed building. This building, once standing at 12 stories, now lies in ruins.

The crisis began with a mother reaching out on Monday. Her desperation was palpable as she sought help for her three children, trapped in a collapsed apartment. The building, located in Caraballeda, a severely affected area in La Guaira state, had claimed her sense of security.

The American team, initially en route to another disaster site, diverted to assist. Trey Espy, assistant chief with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, led the task force. The team included search dogs whose keen senses detected signs of life beneath the debris. Special listening devices further confirmed tapping sounds, indicating possible survivors. This prompted a call for specialized excavation tools.

Rescue workers have since utilized every means available, from concrete cutters to their bare hands, to remove debris as swiftly as possible. Espy emphasized the urgency, stating, “We know time is ticking.”

In addition to the Los Angeles team, a significant number of specialists from Fairfax County, Virginia, and Miami-Dade County, Florida, have joined the international effort to rescue as many as possible.

The earthquakes struck with a brutal intensity, ravaging coastal regions near Caracas, Venezuela’s capital. The death toll has reached at least 1,900, with many more feared trapped in the countless collapsed structures across the affected areas.
