Venezuelan Earthquake Rescue Efforts Continue Amidst Challenges

2 hours ago 0

Following two significant earthquakes in northern Venezuela, international rescue teams, including those from the U.S., persist in efforts to rescue individuals trapped beneath debris. The earthquakes struck almost a week ago.

One notable case is that of 44-year-old security guard Hernan Gil Flores. He remains trapped under a partially collapsed 10-story building in La Guaira. Rescuers, including Manny Sampang from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, stress the complexity of this rescue. Multiple buildings lean against the structure they attempt to access.

Gil Flores is believed to be inside the security booth located in the underground parking garage. Rescue teams exercise caution due to potential further collapses. Communication with Gil Flores has been established, and he has received water. His wife, Gusbimar Gonzalez, confirms that he is not injured.

As of Tuesday, the confirmed death toll from the earthquakes, measuring 7.5 and 7.2 in magnitude and occurring within a minute after 6 p.m. local time on June 24, exceeds 1,900. The United Nations reports tens of thousands missing.

Amidst the destruction, rescuers have achieved some successes. An 18-day-old baby and mother were rescued after 32 hours trapped under debris. Elsewhere, a mother and her 9-month-old baby were extracted with only minor injuries, according to Virginia Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1. Venezuelan authorities report approximately 6,400 people rescued thus far.

NASA satellite data suggests nearly 59,000 buildings likely sustained damage or collapsed entirely in the region. The U.N. notes that about 1.8 million people, including nearly 700,000 children, require humanitarian aid.

The worst damage centers in La Guaira along the coast. Many residents, such as Marianae Hernandez, have fled inland to Caracas seeking refuge. Hernandez, whose home was destroyed, reports living in tents with her family. She describes the situation as challenging, particularly for parents trying to stay resilient for their children.
