Record Heat Wave Grips Central and Eastern U.S.

2 hours ago 0

Hot Weather Alert: Communities across the central and eastern United States are experiencing a severe heat wave. Meteorologists warn of dangerous conditions due to high temperatures combined with humidity as the July Fourth holiday approaches.

The heat index, which takes humidity into account when measuring apparent temperature, might reach between 105°F and 115°F. Cities like Chicago and Minneapolis have already reported temperatures exceeding 100°F.

Forecasted High Temperatures: The National Weather Service predicts several days of temperatures above 100°F across regions including the lower Great Lakes, mid-Atlantic, and Mississippi and Ohio River valleys. Record highs are expected in areas ranging from the lower Great Lakes to New England.

Major cities feeling the heat include New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Detroit. Southern cities like Dallas, Little Rock, and Memphis are also in for high temperatures.

Heat Records Expected:

Wednesday:

  • New York City, NY: 102°F
  • Philadelphia, PA: 104°F
  • Washington Dulles, VA: 100°F
  • Chicago, IL: 97°F
  • More records to be broken in various East Coast and Midwest cities.

Under Pressure: This event is fueled by a “heat dome,” a high-pressure system trapping heat and minimizing convective cloud formation and rain. These conditions lead to prolonged heat waves.

The dome also deflects summer thunderstorms that could bring relief. Prevention measures include frequent checks on vulnerable populations such as young children, elderly, those with chronic conditions, and pregnant women.

Safety Recommendations:

  • Stay hydrated continuously.
  • Take breaks in the shade.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
  • Never leave kids or pets in unattended vehicles.
