Neil the Elephant Seal: A Social Media Sensation

5 hours ago 0

In Wellington, New Zealand, Neil, a 1,000 kg (2,200 pound) elephant seal, has become a local celebrity. He has returned to his birthplace on the Australian coast, but unlike other locals, Neil brings fame and property damage with him. His twice-yearly visits to southern Tasmania see him hauling onto land after months at sea, disrupting towns and infrastructure.

Neil’s popularity has skyrocketed, garnering over 1.4 million followers on TikTok. Despite his charming jerk-like behavior, his antics have raised concerns. Juvenile male elephant seals practice dominance battles where adults crash their chests together. Without other juveniles to spar with, Neil has resorted to battling parked cars and barriers.

Experts like Sophia Volzke from the University of Tasmania say Neil’s behavior is typical for growing seals. However, local officials, including Kris Carlyon from Tasmania’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment, urge the public to give Neil space. They’ve witnessed people risking safety to capture photos.

Carlyon warns against a scenario similar to the Norwegian walrus incident in 2023, where crowd attraction led to euthanasia for safety. The risk of ‘loving Neil to death’ is real. Neil, the only male elephant seal visiting Tasmania, is following a typical pattern, as seals naturally return biannually to their birthplace.

Sub-Antarctic islands house breeding elephant seals, and Neil’s mother likely arrived from such an island. Females have visited Tasmania but without causing similar chaos. Volzke suggests finding ways to coexist with these returning animals.

The future for Neil is uncertain. At maturity, he might grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) and weigh three times as much. However, only 10% of male seals survive past the breeding age of 10.

Currently, Neil remains in his chosen spot amidst sidewalk puddles and is occasionally seen with an orange traffic cone—endearing him further to his followers. Local sentiments vary, as some residents recognize Neil as a noteworthy export.
