A significant presence of masked members from the white nationalist group, Patriot Front, marched through the capital on Saturday. This occurred amid grand celebrations of the United States’ 250th anniversary. Social media flooded with videos and images showing numerous men walking near Union Station and other parts of the city. The participants wore navy-blue shirts, khaki pants, tan baseball caps, sunglasses, and white face coverings. They held American flags, Confederate flags, and various banners.
The demonstration contrasted sharply with widespread Independence Day activities marking the semiquincentennial, which attracted large crowds. Visitors engaged in military demonstrations, parades, concerts, and witnessed a historic fireworks display on the National Mall.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) confirmed its awareness of “First Amendment activities” in the Eastern Market neighborhood. A spokesperson stated, “MPD recognizes the rights of individuals to peacefully express their views and remains committed to maintaining public safety and security for DC residents and visitors.” No arrests occurred, according to MPD.
Understanding Patriot Front
Patriot Front is identified as a white supremacist and neo-fascist group by civil rights organizations and researchers. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) notes that the group believes America should exclusively belong to European descendants. Known for organized flash demonstrations, often unexpected, Patriot Front promotes nonviolent disobedience. Their objective is to “promote patriotic politics and combat anti-national messaging,” as stated on their website.
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) reports that Patriot Front originated in late 2017 after breaking away from another neo-fascist group, Vanguard America. This split followed the tragic events of the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a counterprotester was killed. SPLC lists Patriot Front as one of the most active white nationalist groups in the U.S., largely due to its propaganda and flash marches.
Documents obtained by USA Today show that Patriot Front has over 540 members across states except Hawaii as of early 2026. This Texas-based group has gathered more than half of its constituents in the past two years. It maintains ties with several Active Clubs, a network of white supremacists blending mixed martial arts with propaganda across America.
Thomas Ryan Rousseau, Patriot Front’s founder, recently encouraged members to remain fit and distribute white supremacist propaganda. He emphasized recruiting 600 members by July 4, in line with the nation’s 250th anniversary. “This is a picked band of dedicated men that far exceeds any of our domestic contemporaries,” Rousseau stated in an internal message.
Patriot Front did not respond to Newsweek’s request for comment, and attempts to contact Rousseau were unsuccessful.
The Group’s Activity in Washington
Saturday’s march is part of a pattern for Patriot Front in Washington, D.C., and nearby areas. They have previously been involved in significant events in the capital, such as the March for Life. In May 2023, around 150 members marched through downtown Washington with shields, flags, and banners. More recently, they held an unannounced march in Virginia Beach, met with criticism from locals and authorities.
On Saturday, the group continued its march under law enforcement’s watchful eye before dispersing, even as holiday crowds filled the downtown area.
