In the heart of Trump territory, Rep. Kevin Hern, a Republican from Oklahoma, pushes for a seat in the Senate, questioning the delay in the passage of a voter ID and citizenship verification bill. After securing a primary win, Hern emphasized the frequent voter inquiries about the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act.
“Voters keep asking about the SAVE Act,” Hern shared prior to the primary elections. Despite its importance, the bill remains stalled in the Senate with Democrats unanimously opposing it and some Republicans diverging in support. Hern expressed confusion over Republican resistance, stating, “While I understand Democrats’ opposition, I’m unsure why some Republicans are against it. Democrats rarely back measures that protect America.”
With five terms in the House and ascending to a senior role in GOP leadership, Hern sought a Senate role following President Trump’s nomination of fellow Oklahoman Markwayne Mullin to helm the Department of Homeland Security. In his Senate run, Hern has garnered endorsements from notable senators and Trump himself, who acknowledged Hern as being “strongly backed by MAGA supporters and esteemed Senate leaders.”
Oklahoma’s deep-rooted support for Trump buoyed Hern’s campaign, noting constituents’ reverence for the former president and his own alignment with Trump. Hern projected confidence for November, with Trump historically dominating the state elections, securing victory in all 77 counties.
Nevertheless, Hern plans to maintain momentum until November, drawing from his industrious background. Growing up without indoor plumbing and later owning a McDonald’s franchise empire, Hern touts the ethos of hard work, earning him the moniker “McCongressman.”
“Hard work levels the playing field,” Hern said. “It’s the same approach for the Senate race; I started strong since day one.” Within 48 hours, Trump endorsed Hern citing his eight-year track record. Hern attributes success to relentless effort and relationship-building.
Looking ahead, Hern remains open to pursuing leadership within Senate GOP ranks, stating, “Waiting for opportunities is ineffective; proactive efforts define success.” Hern’s philosophy challenges complacency, pushing past third-base contenders with diligent groundwork and strategic positioning.
