A group of wealthy celebrities and activists from Hollywood marked America’s 250th anniversary with a video campaign urging opposition to President Donald Trump’s administration. The video premiered on Variety and featured stars like Mark Ruffalo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ted Danson, and Judd Apatow.
The nearly 10-minute video draws from the 2017 book On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder. Snyder warns viewers that the upcoming midterm elections are crucial for the nation’s future, saying they represent a turning point where voters will decide the country’s direction.
Snyder states, “Today, the Republic is 250 years old. Strange though it is for me, this book has been along with the Republic for the last 10 years. I wrote it in November of 2016.” He adds, “A time when things could turn very well, or they could turn very ill indeed.”
In the video, celebrities read lines such as “Do not obey in advance,” spoken by Leslie Odom Jr., Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Holland Taylor. Another line, “Beware of the one-party state,” was recited by Isabel Allende and Lisa Rinna.
Mark Ruffalo, known for his role in Marvel’s Avengers films, explained to Variety why he participated. Ruffalo, a vocal critic of the Trump administration, hopes the nation will shift away from a government serving the wealthy and focus on the needs of younger generations.
Ruffalo expressed a desire to close the wealth gap and honor the planet, promoting respect for all beings and advocating for a society that values Indigenous wisdom.
Snyder shared the video on Substack, emphasizing the need to create a better America. He criticized the current 250th anniversary celebrations, arguing they threaten liberty by enabling arbitrary rule and corruption.
Among the participants in the video are Isabel Allende, Judd Apatow, Margaret Atwood, Joan Baez, Sophia Bush, Misha Collins, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Ted Danson, Ron Funches, Tony Goldwyn, and more.
