USMNT’s World Cup Journey Ends with Loss to Belgium

The United States Men’s National Team exited the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed his disappointment with the team’s lackluster performance.

Pochettino stated, “From the beginning, we didn’t connect with the game. Even when we scored and tied 1-1, we conceded almost immediately. It was tough from the start. We didn’t perform as we usually can, and that is the reality.” He shared these thoughts with Fox Sports’ Jenny Taft.

Belgium’s impressive play was noteworthy, achieving their win with only 43% ball possession. They managed 15 shots, with seven on target, resulting in four goals. In contrast, the USMNT struggled, failing to replicate the confident displays seen in earlier matches. The team’s only goal came from a free kick by Malik Tillman in the first half, but further scoring opportunities remained elusive.

In the aftermath, Pochettino commented on potential discussions with the federation, saying, “In the next weeks, we can start to talk if the federation wants to talk. Right now, it’s about resting, thinking, and having conversations. I’m happy with the relationship we’ve built; now is not the moment to talk about my future.”

Despite Tillman’s equalizer, Belgium regained the lead quickly and retained control into the second half. A critical moment saw a misstep from USMNT goalkeeper Matt Freese, whose error led to Belgium’s third goal by Hans Vanaken at the 57-minute mark.

Compounding the team’s woes, USMNT lost Christian Pulisic to an injury in the second half. Pulisic, visibly struggling, was substituted and watched from the bench.

Belgium sealed their victory with Romelu Lukaku’s goal in stoppage time, leading to a decisive 4-1 scoreline. Belgium will face Spain, a leading contender, in the quarterfinals.

This result marks the elimination of the USMNT, the final host country to exit the 2030 World Cup. Although the three host nations provided many memorable moments, USMNT supporters hoped for a stronger showing from their team in the loss against Belgium.
