In 2021, a Department of Transportation review concluded that Chao used her office to benefit family interests. Although the findings were referred to the Department of Justice, no prosecution ensued. Additional ethics concerns arose regarding Chao’s attempts to include family members with shipping ties in meetings during a planned 2017 China trip and regarding COVID-19 relief loans received by Foremost Group.

“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital,” his office informed Newsweek. “The Senator continues to improve and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”
