Actor Patrick Dempsey, known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on ABC’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ has declared he will not run for Senate in Maine. His announcement follows speculation he might replace Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee facing scrutiny.
Dempsey, a native of Maine, addressed his decision in an op-ed published by the Portland Press Herald. He emphasized his commitment to public service but felt his current life offers more impact. “Do I truly want to serve in Congress? After a lot of thought, I realized the answer is no,” Dempsey stated.
Platner faces an allegation of sexual assault, leading to loss of endorsements. Dempsey highlighted his fondness for Maine and the importance of helping its community but prefers impacting lives through the Dempsey Center, which aids cancer patients.
The uncertainty surrounding Platner has prompted names like Troy Jackson and Nirav Shah, who previously attempted bids in the gubernatorial primary, to consider entering the Senate race. Shenna Bellows has expressed contemplating a run if Platner exits.
State Rep. Valli Geiger and House Speaker Ryan Fecteau are also potential contenders but haven’t confirmed plans. If Platner steps down by Monday, the Democratic Party has until July 27 to make a replacement.
