Woman’s Postpartum Experience Highlights Importance of Trusting Instincts and Recognizing Sepsis

1 month ago 0

Kimberley Sidhu, a 29-year-old mother from Alberta, Canada, faced severe health complications following the birth of her second child in May 2024. During her pregnancy, Sidhu suffered from intense morning sickness that left her unable to work. To induce labor, she underwent a membrane sweep. Soon after, Sidhu noticed an unusual green discharge, which she initially thought might be due to lighting or hormonal changes. Despite her concerns, the midwife assured her there was no need to worry if the baby’s movements were normal.

After giving birth on May 26, 2024, Sidhu experienced alarming symptoms. She shook violently, her skin turned purple, and she felt cold despite being covered with blankets. In the following days, pelvic pain, nausea, and leg numbness intensified. Her midwife attributed these symptoms to typical postpartum recovery, suggesting hormonal changes and her breastmilk affecting her condition.

From Recovery to Medical Emergency

Sidhu’s condition worsened, leading her to return to the hospital. Hospital tests revealed she was in septic shock due to an invasive group A streptococcal infection. Sepsis is a serious medical emergency caused by an extreme response to infection. An emergency hysterectomy was necessary to save her life as her uterus was severely infected. Sidhu also faced other challenges like atypical pneumonia, cellulitis, and kidney failure.

Rebuilding Her Life After Surgery

Sidhu spent three weeks in the hospital and underwent a year of physiotherapy to relearn walking. Her left leg remains impaired, causing chronic pain and occasional falls. Memory issues, anxiety, and concentration problems also persist. She can no longer partake in activities like going for long walks with her children, which causes her guilt and shame.

Sidhu is now raising awareness about sepsis, emphasizing the importance of recognizing its signs summarized by the “TIME” acronym: Temperature, Infection, Mental decline, and Extremely ill feelings. She shares her experiences on social media under @thatsepsismom to help others recognize sepsis early.

“Knowing the warning signs is crucial, and listening to postpartum mothers can save lives. Trusting their instincts could be a matter of life and death,” Sidhu emphasizes. Her story serves as a reminder that new mothers are often aware of their bodies and should have their concerns taken seriously.
