Expert Advice on Shark Encounters: Swim in Quiet Areas to Avoid Attacks

1 month ago 0

Shark researcher Jesse Watters recently hosted Chris Fischer, the founder of OCEARCH, to discuss the increase in shark attacks during early summer. Notable incidents include a beach closure in New York due to bull sharks, a shark bite in Queens, and an attack on a child in knee-deep water in Florida. According to Fischer, shark populations have recovered to levels seen in the 1960s. He advises beachgoers to avoid areas with active bait fish to enhance safety.

An alarming encounter involved Florida spearfisherman Matthew Piendak who encountered three aggressive sharks during a dive near Destin. Piendak managed to escape unharmed, capturing the chilling event on camera. Click for more OutKick Sports coverage. During a safety stop — a pause to allow excess nitrogen to exit the body and prevent decompression sickness — sharks began to approach. Footage shows Piendak using his speargun to maintain distance from the sharks. A nearby boat eventually rescued him, preventing any bites.

This wasn’t Piendak’s first brush with marine life. His Instagram features dives, encounters with wildlife, and significant fish catches, including dolphins, manta rays, sea turtles, fish schools, and numerous sharks.

Wildlife biologist Forrest Galante explains that sharks don’t typically see humans as prey. However, a curious or agitated shark can cause harm with an exploratory bite due to their inability to use hands. Sharks use their mouth to “investigate” potential food, which can be dangerous for humans.

Luckily, Piendak remained composed and kept his speargun between himself and the sharks until help arrived. Expert opinions suggest most human-shark encounters don’t lead to bites. This was an impressive demonstration of calmness from someone comfortable in the water.

For those preferring to enjoy sharks from afar, following nature-focused platforms on social media allows safe admiration. Amber Harding writes about wildlife for OutKick.
