By July 16, 2026, federal officials have approved an emergency import plan to relocate 28 beluga whales from a closed Canadian theme park to various U.S. aquariums. This move is part of an international effort to rescue the whales.
Closure of Marineland
Marineland, located in Niagara Falls, Ontario, ceased public operations in 2024. Despite closing, the park retained possession of the beluga whales. Lacking resources to care for them, Marineland cited potential euthanasia if relocation or funding wasn’t secured. Around one year post-closure, plans emerged to move the whales.
New Homes for the Whales
The belugas will journey to accredited U.S. aquariums such as SeaWorld San Antonio, SeaWorld San Diego, Georgia Aquarium, and the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Additionally, two whales will head to Oceanografic Valencia in Spain, pending permit approval.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration advocated for relocation, highlighting the lack of suitable facilities in Canada that provide necessary medical and husbandry care for the belugas.
Relocation Efforts and Challenges
The relocation requires several weeks and will focus on the whales’ comfort and safety. Marineland’s treatment of animals has faced criticism. Since 2019, 20 whales have died at the park, according to The Canadian Press. Canada’s move to end whale and dolphin captivity became law in 2019.
Canadian Government Involvement
Earlier this year, Canada’s Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson approved a conditional plan for the belugas’ move to the U.S. Full export approval depends on health checks conducted by veterinarians, as stated by Minister Thompson.
