Xi’s remarks were made during the World AI Conference in Shanghai, an event attended by notable figures such as U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.

The conference, which took place on July 17, 2026, served as a platform for leaders to discuss the future of AI. Xi stressed the importance of equitable access to AI technology, balancing innovation with security concerns, particularly as China competes with the United States in AI advancements.
