Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha Vance have announced the birth of their new son, Alec Neel Vance. This marks a significant moment, as Alec is the first child born to a sitting vice president in over 150 years. The last vice president to have a child while in office was Schuyler Colfax, whose son was born in 1870.

The couple shared the news on social media, with a statement reading, “We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother.” Alec joins siblings Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.

The Vances expressed their gratitude to military doctors and staff at Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit for their support. The official White House account also extended congratulations to the couple.

However, by 2025, it had fallen to 977th place, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). This decline mirrors changing trends in American naming preferences.

Data shows Alec was at 650th in 1900, then fluctuated, reaching 939th in 1927, and 912th by 1947. It didn’t rise significantly until 1979, eventually hitting a peak in the mid-1990s. Despite a brief resurgence from 467th in 2014 to 456th in 2015, Alec’s popularity has largely decreased.

Currently, names like Liam, Noah, Oliver, Theodore, and Henry are more favored for boys, while Olivia, Charlotte, Emma, Amelia, and Sophia top the girls’ list. A 2025 Nameberry survey found that over 75% of parents prefer names outside the top 10 to ensure uniqueness. This aligns with the Vances’ choice for their children; Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel are also uncommon names.

The selection of Alec, once mainstream, now adds distinctiveness to the Vance family. It also highlights broader shifts in naming habits as modern parents seek unique and less conventional names.
