Democrats Rally Behind Troy Jackson in Maine Senate Race

Washington — The Democratic race for the Maine Senate seat, vacated by Graham Platner, has become more defined as Democrats support former state Senate President Troy Jackson. The rallying occurred before the party’s nominating convention, which is scheduled for this upcoming Saturday.

The focus on Jackson intensified after several nominees dropped out following county meetings held to choose delegates. Key figures who withdrew from the race include Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, Nirav Shah, former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control, Dan Kleban, co-founder of Maine Beer Company, and Jordan Wood, a former House and Senate contender. They encouraged party unity to challenge GOP Senator Susan Collins in the November elections.

Democrats don’t have a day to waste in unifying around that shared goal, Bellows stated.

Jackson consolidated his nomination by gaining a majority of the 601 delegate slots needed for selection. Although not legally obligated, delegates are expected to vote for Jackson in the June 25 convention. Jackson expressed gratitude on Facebook, citing the delegates’ performance as crucial to his success.

A veteran of Maine politics since 2002, Jackson served in both the House of Representatives and the state Senate, where he was president from 2018 to 2024. His political ambitions included a recent gubernatorial bid, where he finished third in the Democratic primary.

Known as a “pickup truck progressive,” Jackson has alliances with independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, having supported his 2016 presidential run. Jackson champions progressive policies like Medicare for All, taxing billionaires, and calls for abolishing ICE. He also opposes U.S. military support to Israel, citing allegations of genocide in Gaza.

Jackson’s endorsed delegate slate’s success left less room for other candidates. Kleban acknowledged the lack of a viable path forward after county nominations.

The urgency to select a Democratic nominee followed Platner’s exit due to sexual assault accusations, which he denies. The state party has until July 27 to select a nominee through a convention.

Throughout his gubernatorial campaign, Jackson shared the platform with Platner when notable figures like Sanders and Rep. Ro Khanna visited. After the assault allegations emerged, Jackson called for Platner to step down, stating on MSNOW that, He lied to me, he lied to a lot of us.

As Democrats gear up for the November challenge against Collins, Maine’s election represents a crucial opportunity. Collins has a history of resilience in her nearly three-decade Senate tenure. For Democrats, flipping four Republican seats while defending their own is necessary to gain Senate control, a task complicated by Maine’s critical importance.
