Earthquake Strikes Southern Japan: Casualties and Damage Reported

Multiple fatalities are feared after an explosion occurred at a mall following a recent earthquake, as reported by local media citing police sources.

Earthquake Details

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.1 and a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6 miles), had its epicenter in Kumamoto Prefecture, located in the southwestern region of Japan. Aerial footage has revealed the derailment of a cargo train, collapsing towers at an industrial plant, and a small building engulfed in flames.

Japan’s location on the ‘Ring of Fire,’ where several tectonic plates meet, results in frequent tremors, making it highly susceptible to earthquakes.

Historic Castle Damaged

Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s oldest castles, sustained damage. Originally constructed in 1607 by Kato Kiyomasa, the first daimyo of the castle, it is a major tourist destination. Video footage showed damage to parts of the outer walls.

The castle has been temporarily closed due to the earthquake, according to a statement from its management.

Search and Rescue Operations

Police in Yatsushiro city have reported that several individuals are missing at Nippon Paper Industries’ Yatsushiro Plant following a chimney collapse. Aerial views show the chimney damaged.

Efforts are ongoing to account for missing persons and assess potential casualties, as stated by a plant spokesperson.

Mall Explosion

The National Police Agency reported difficulties in contacting 20 to 30 employees at the Aeon Mall in Kumamoto. Authorities are working to ascertain if anyone is trapped inside. Many customers managed to escape, though rescuers continue efforts to find anyone still trapped.

Casualties Confirmed

Reports indicate a number of deaths have occurred at the mall post-explosion, as confirmed by local broadcasters. At least 10 individuals, including mall employees, remain unaccounted for.

Nuclear Plant Status

Japan’s nuclear authority confirmed to the International Atomic Energy Agency that the Sendai nuclear power plant remains undamaged. Since the 2011 Fukushima disaster, scrutiny of nuclear plants during earthquakes has increased.

Disaster Response

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced the deployment of 300 members from the Japan Self-Defense Forces to assist with disaster relief operations in southern Japan.

Local fire officials reported multiple people trapped inside a partially destroyed AEON Mall. An explosion had occurred, with reports of fire trucks present at the scene.

Extent of Damage

The quake disrupted transport services, with bullet train services suspended at Fukuoka’s JR Hakata Station. In Kumamoto Prefecture, shelves and office equipment were left toppled.

Aerial views showed significant damage to at least 12 buildings, including collapsed structures, with reports of trapped individuals.

Seven fires have also been reported in the prefecture.
