IndyCar recently presented its much-anticipated new chassis, the IR-28. This announcement excited fans and drivers alike as they had the opportunity to see the car in action at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Scheduled testing at the track allowed Ed Carpenter Racing’s Alexander Rossi to take the chassis for a spin. While there is substantial development ahead for the IR-28 and the new engines from Chevrolet and Honda, Rossi expressed satisfaction with the car’s preparedness.
“I’ve been a part of some new car launches before, and I can’t say that any have gone as smooth as this one has,” Rossi shared, according to IndyCar.com. “Everyone involved has done an outstanding job. We’ve all waited eagerly for this moment.”
The testing weekend faced some adverse weather, impacting track time, but Rossi still gained crucial insights. Despite the weather, the day’s objectives were achieved, as the car performed well with only minor issues.
The IR-28, designed to integrate the Aeroscreen and a hybrid system, will weigh approximately 100 pounds less than its predecessor, the DW12, in use since 2012. This has raised eagerness among drivers to experience the new design.
The next driver to test the IR-28 will be reigning series champion Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing, set to continue evaluations on the IMS road course.
