Sen. John Fetterman Criticizes Socialist Influence in Democratic Party

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman expressed concerns about the increasing influence of socialists and communists within the Democratic Party. Speaking at the Israel on Campus Coalition conference, he highlighted figures like Hasan Piker, a socialist streamer, as examples of those steering the party toward a more radical path.

Fetterman explained that Democrats should distance themselves from individuals who align with communism and laud leaders such as Mao Zedong or regimes in Cuba. He emphasized that this influence is impacting the party.

Hasan Piker, a prominent voice on the left, supports socialist figures like New York City’s Zohran Mamdani and Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. Piker has publicly supported Mao and defended Cuba, attributing its struggles to American policies.

Fetterman described the current direction of the Democratic Party as “troubling”. He pointed to recent primaries as tests of the party’s direction, where establishment candidates like Rep. Wesley Bell had notable successes. In Michigan, the primary was particularly close, with left-wing Abdul El-Sayed challenging the moderate Rep. Haley Stevens.

Fetterman criticized certain party members for labeling Israel an apartheid state, asserting that these views are misguided. He urged the party not to cater to fringe elements, stating, “Those are core values. You just can’t pander to those kinds of people.”

Former President Donald Trump also weighed in, warning that the Democratic Party has shifted beyond socialism to “hardcore, godless communists.” Trump suggested the formation of a “communists of America” party as a separate entity.

At the Israel on Campus Coalition event, Fetterman noted a shift even among pro-Israel Democrats, who now face pressure to justify their support for Israel. He observed that terms like “Zionist” are being used derogatorily.

Fetterman also diverged from most Democrats regarding Iran, defending Trump administration actions against Iranian nuclear sites. He supported military strikes and opposed the War Powers Act, stating that dealing with Iran remains a significant issue.
