Influencer’s Death Highlights Ongoing Violence in Mexico

A social media influencer was killed during a live stream in Sinaloa, Mexico, a region plagued by violence. Authorities revealed that César Gastélum was shot on Tuesday night in Culiacan, raising concerns about targeted attacks on influencers.

The video of the incident shows Gastélum with two men in a parking lot. Two individuals arrived on a motorcycle. One pulled a gun and shot Gastélum. They fled the scene swiftly.

The attack occurred near the local prosecutor’s office during a busy time of day. An investigation is underway. Authorities noted Gastélum’s videos alluded to organizations linked to criminal activities. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized the need to capture the culprits.

Gastélum had a large following on TikTok and other platforms, often sharing comedy clips involving regional Mexican music. He sometimes called himself “bélico,” a term associated with cartel culture.

Messages of condolence flooded his social media accounts following his death. Sinaloa sees fights between groups like Los Chapitos and Los Mayos, each leaving distinct markers on victims.

On the night of his death, Gastélum wore a white sombrero. Onlookers left candles at the site. This incident mirrors a previous attack in 2025 when influencer Valeria Márquez was killed on a live stream in Jalisco.

With Mexico’s government facing pressure to curb cartel violence, Gastélum’s death marks a troubling trend of targeting influencers. Analyst David Saucedo explained that influencers face danger for many reasons, such as affiliations with criminal factions, producing related content, or even money laundering for cartels.

Criminal groups seek to control areas and use influencers as conduits for messages, noted Saucedo.
