Roger Craig’s Emotional Hall of Fame Speech Reveals Battle with Vascular Dementia

On August 8, 2026, former San Francisco 49ers star Roger Craig delivered a moving speech at his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction in Canton, Ohio. His address included a poignant revelation about his health.

Craig, adorned in his Hall of Fame gold jacket, shared a prerecorded video message at Tom Benson Stadium. The ceremony, hosted by his former teammate Jamie Williams, saw Craig receive a standing ovation from the crowd of attendees. As he approached the end of his nine-minute speech, he made a significant announcement.

Several minutes into the speech, Craig disclosed, “I have vascular dementia. My doctors believe it’s related, at least partly, to the concussions I sustained during my football career.”

He detailed that the symptoms gradually became noticeable, affecting both him and his family. According to the Mayo Clinic, vascular dementia can result in symptoms such as confusion, difficulty finding words, trouble with attention, and memory issues.

Craig emphasized, “Football gave me opportunities beyond my wildest dreams. However, we understand more about brain health now than during my playing days. By sharing my experience, I hope to encourage awareness of wellbeing and seeking aid when needed.”

Despite his diagnosis, Craig expressed that it doesn’t define his identity. He remains committed to his role as a father, husband, teammate, and friend, cherishing the sport and its community.

Drafted by the 49ers in 1983, Craig gained recognition as a versatile fullback. His exceptional skills in running, receiving, and blocking contributed to the team’s success, leading to three Super Bowl victories. Craig made history in 1985 as the first NFL player with 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in the same season. This accomplishment earned him the title of AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 1988.

Reflecting on his career, Craig recalled, “Bill Walsh saw potential in me that others overlooked. We weren’t after records; we aimed for team victories. Achieving 1,000 yards in both categories was an outcome of teamwork and passion.”

Craig credited his teammates for their selflessness and focus on winning.

Alongside Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Kuechly, and Adam Vinatieri, Craig joined the 2026 Hall of Fame Class, selected from the seniors category.
