A Damascus court recently sentenced former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia. Assad, who has lived in exile in Russia since his removal from power in 2024, faced charges for crimes against humanity and war crimes during Syria’s extended civil war.
This landmark ruling, which occurred on Tuesday, also included death sentences for seven additional former security officials. Among them are Assad’s brother, Maher, and cousin, Atef Najib. These individuals were key figures during Assad’s regime, which fell in December 2024.
The decision by the court marks a significant moment for Syrians, many of whom gathered in front of the Palace of Justice in Damascus. These citizens carried photographs of relatives killed in the conflict, celebrating what they view as a step toward justice.
