Tony Romo’s Status at CBS Under Scrutiny After Arrest

Tony Romo’s future with CBS remains uncertain following his arrest last month for operating while intoxicated. CBS Sports president David Berson stated there is no set timeline or decision regarding Romo’s position. At the recent ‘NFL on CBS’ Media Day, Berson was questioned about Romo’s indefinite leave from the network.

J.J. Watt has been named CBS Sports’ top analyst alongside Jim Nantz starting with the 2026 NFL season. Romo’s arrest occurred after Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office deputies noted signs of impairment while he was driving in Wisconsin post a golf event.

“It’s an evolving situation and we are still assessing,” Berson addressed questions regarding Romo. “There is no timetable or final decision at this time. This is a personal and legal matter for Tony.”

When asked about Romo’s leave, Berson emphasized the importance of CBS’s image and brand, stating, “The focus should be and needs to be on our presentation and this great product.” He assured that the network has a strong team ready to fill in where needed.

Romo faces charges for operating while intoxicated, having an open alcohol container in his vehicle, and unsafe passing. He is in the midst of a substantial 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS, with $72 million reportedly still pending.

Prior to his arrest, there were already questions about Romo’s future with CBS beyond 2026. Reports highlighted concerns about his chemistry with Nantz, with some critics suggesting it has waned.

There is also speculation that CBS might invoke a morals clause to terminate Romo’s contract over the arrest, though his legal team would likely contest given the significant financial implications. Romo’s court date is scheduled for September 21, just days after CBS Sports’ initial NFL broadcast of the season.
