Advancements in Space-Manufactured Pharmaceuticals

Redwire, through its subsidiary SpaceMD, has secured the first operational flight of SpaceX’s Starfall. The aim is to research and develop drugs using microgravity to enhance their potency and other qualities. If successful, these space-manufactured drugs could be the first physical products created beyond Earth, in addition to Earth’s observation and satellite communications.

Experiments with potential space-manufactured drugs have been conducted on the International Space Station for decades. Using Starfall, SpaceMD is advancing toward treatments for diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s in low Earth orbit. The Starfall spacecraft, first launched on a Falcon 9 on June 23, features a disk-shaped design. It is about 2.5 feet tall, with a diameter of 10.2 feet, and weighs approximately 4,600 pounds. It carries a cargo of about 2,200 pounds, consisting of an aluminum top plate and a detachable carbon-fiber heat shield. Payloads, like those developed by SpaceMD, are carried in the top plate.

A typical Starfall mission would involve taking its cargo to low Earth orbit, remaining there for a time, and reentering the Earth’s atmosphere for an ocean splashdown. The SpaceMD mission is set to launch in 2028. It will carry as many as 32 Pharmaceutical In-Space Laboratory (PIL-BOXes) to develop candidates for crystallizing drug compounds in microgravity, leading to improved formulations and therapeutics.

Redwire has successfully flown versions of the PIL-BOX on the International Space Station. Starfall will expand their capacity for drug research in low Earth orbit significantly. As reported by Tech Times, SpaceMD could process more than 100 distinct drug compounds in a single mission, compared to 45 on the ISS, which includes insulin and drug candidates for cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes.

Crystallizing drugs in space eliminates the factors of gravity and temperature differentials that can damage crystals on Earth. Space-grown crystals are larger and more orderly, affecting dissolution rate, solubility, and bioavailability, which refers to how quickly and completely an active ingredient enters the bloodstream.

SpaceMD has a licensing agreement with ExesaLibero Pharma for the further development, clinical trials, and regulatory approval of drugs from space-grown crystals. Any successful treatments could offer significant improvements for those with debilitating diseases. The National Cancer Institute estimates over 2.1 million cancer diagnoses by 2026 in the U.S., with 626,140 deaths. Meanwhile, the CDC notes that 6.7 million American adults live with Alzheimer’s, a number expected to double by 2060.

In past perspectives, space activities have often been dismissed as luxurious or distractions. Politicians like Sen. Bernie Sanders have criticized space endeavors by entrepreneurs such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. However, it’s increasingly clear that space exploration provides tangible benefits. Enterprises like Redwire signal a flood of advantages, with better, more effective drugs marking a new commercial space age.
