Future of LIV Golf Tour Uncertain Amid Funding Cuts

1 hour ago 0

The future of the LIV Golf Tour faces uncertainty as the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia announced plans to withdraw funding after the 2026 season. Initially, the tour attracted big names like Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and Phil Mickelson with lucrative contracts, but recent challenges have hindered its growth. Some young golfers, like Michael La Sasso, chose LIV over the PGA Tour, but major talents remain with the PGA.

LIV CEO Scott O’Neil remains optimistic about attracting new investors. He mentioned a signed term sheet with a mysterious backer, and DeChambeau is involved in meetings with potential investors. However, skepticism remains as some players, like Koepka, have returned to the PGA Tour. Jon Rahm could follow suit, and the DP World Tour tightens player commitments by restricting dual-tour participation in 2027.

I think time might run out.

Ian Poulter, one of LIV’s early signings, expressed doubts about the tour’s longevity during a YouTube match. He noted a deadline of September 1 to secure $300 million in funding, questioning if the PIF will allow the business to face bankruptcy in exchange for a new version.

Poulter’s concerns extend to players uncertain about their future. While some may have opportunities in the DP World Tour or PGA Tour, others, including newcomers and those nearing retirement, face challenging decisions.

Clearly, players did not expect such a sudden withdrawal of funding in 2026. Joining a new league always carries risks, and those affected must consider their next steps. Well-known players like DeChambeau and Rahm have options, but others may struggle with limited choices.

The next few weeks could reveal LIV’s fate if Poulter’s concerns are accurate. Many players remain in limbo, unsure about continuing with LIV or exploring other opportunities.
