Karoline Leavitt, the former White House press secretary, gave insights into President Donald Trump’s diplomatic methods during a recent interview. She spoke about his direct approach in conversations with foreign leaders, both adversaries and allies.
On the podcast “Hang Out with Sean Hannity,” Leavitt shared her experience during Trump’s phone calls with leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. She also recounted a lunch meeting with ex-British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“I sat in on a lunch with the president and Starmer,” Leavitt recalled. “The president just starts ripping into him for his policies.”
Trump addressed Starmer directly, criticizing his policies and advising him to close borders and handle immigration issues. Leavitt noted Trump’s candid nature with both foreign leaders and the media.
Leavitt said, “What he says to the media publicly is exactly what he’s saying behind the scenes privately, too.” She emphasized that Trump doesn’t play games, sharing the same messages in press conferences.
Discussing Trump’s interactions with Putin and Xi, Leavitt described tense calls where Trump was forthright. She explained that in translator-assisted calls, Trump maintained professionalism despite his usual candid language.
During talks with Xi, Trump highlighted the issue of fentanyl precursors manufactured in China. Leavitt noted Trump’s firm demands for results, leading to action from China.
Trump also urged China to purchase more U.S. soybeans, advocating for American farmers. His demands were met following the meeting, demonstrating his focus on the needs of the country.
In August, Leavitt announced her decision to leave the White House to focus on her family. She expressed gratitude to Trump for trusting her to represent him.
