Father Advocates for National Offenders Database After Daughter’s Murder

1 hour ago 0

In North Charleston, South Carolina, a father is urging lawmakers to establish a national database tracking repeat violent offenders. Stephen Federico spoke out following the murder of his daughter, Logan Federico, during a break-in in Columbia, South Carolina. The suspect had a long criminal history but evaded long-term imprisonment.

Federico addressed Attorney General Todd Blanche and GOP Senator Darline Graham, calling for the implementation of Logan’s Law. This proposed legislation aims to create a federal database of convicted violent offenders and facilitate data-sharing between states. The bill was introduced by the late Senator Lindsey Graham but has not advanced in Congress since April.

“The criminal is more important than the innocent,” Federico expressed at a law enforcement roundtable event. He emphasized the struggle parents face against career criminals.

Federico attributes his daughter’s death to communication failures among police departments. Despite numerous arrests, there were unaddressed warrants against the accused killer in different jurisdictions. Currently, the suspect is awaiting trial for murder and burglary charges.

Though Republicans hold Congress and the Presidency, the bill has stagnated. However, Blanche and Graham expressed optimism that bipartisan support could help pass it. They acknowledged potential challenges if Democrats gain control next year.

Senator Darline Graham, in a competitive race against Democrat Annie Andrews, noted the issue transcends party lines. Recent polls show a tight race, altering the Cook Political Report’s rating from ‘solid Republican’ to ‘likely Republican’.

“I wish I had a crystal ball, but I don’t,” Graham remarked, stressing the bill’s importance for public safety. “This shouldn’t be a red or blue issue.”

Federico, visibly emotional, committed to continuing his advocacy. “I’ll do anything to get this law passed,” he declared. “I’m not a girl dad anymore, and that’s not fair. This was preventable.” He vowed to prevent further tragedies.
