Incumbent Democrat Mike Brown is seeking one more term as Lake County Clerk, facing Republican Leslie Dallner in this year’s race. Brown, a long-serving official, has held various roles including two terms as Lake County Recorder and positions with the Hoosier Lottery and the Gary City Council.
Brown highlights the technological advancements and community programs initiated under his leadership. He emphasizes teamwork, stating, “I’m only as good as the people around me.” Since his appointment in 2009, Brown has implemented a language translation machine, budgeting improvements, and developed programs focused on education and collaborations with mental health organizations. His tenure also included safeguarding election integrity with bipartisan support.
Dallner, from Hobart, brings extensive corporate experience as a financial analyst. Her campaign focuses on “transparency, technology, and transformation.” She aims to improve government efficiency by updating technology and enhancing voter registration processes. Dallner, a former election judge, claims past election law violations were overlooked in Lake County.
She criticizes the county’s previous audit issues, such as a $40 million overstatement in property tax credits, resulting in higher property taxes. Dallner stresses the need for cooperation among county offices and argues that current inefficiencies tarnish public trust.
Brown counters these criticisms, asserting fiscal responsibility within his office. He proudly notes that recent audits found no errors in their processes, attributing success to the diligent work of his team.
“A lot of people don’t know that the county lost an $18 million state credit that was supposed to be applied to our property taxes in Lake County in 2025,” Dallner said, highlighting transparency concerns.
