Defense’s Attempt to Ban Pink in Madison Brooks Case Sparks Controversy

58 minutes ago 0

Madison Brooks’ mother has criticized a legal motion seeking to prohibit spectators from wearing pink during Desmond Carter’s trial. Brooks, once an LSU student, was reportedly gang-raped and then killed in Louisiana. Carter stands accused in her tragic death.

A Louisiana judge will soon decide if clothing worn in support of the victim could prejudice jurors. The defense attorney, Caitlin Fowlkes, who sought the clothing ban, faced contempt charges for using Brooks’ full name in legal documents. Louisiana law mandates sex crime victims be identified only by initials, requiring attorneys to redact full names.

In 2023, Brooks, aged 19, allegedly suffered a gang-rape by several men following a night out. She was then struck by a vehicle, culminating in her untimely death. Despite legal guidelines, Brooks’ name has drawn attention across public platforms and from state officials. Judge Gail Horne Ray, acknowledging public interest, ruled Brooks’ supporters could wear pink in court. Judge Ray found Fowlkes in contempt for not adhering to name redaction laws, though no punishment was imposed.

We wear it to honor her,” expressed Brooks’ mother regarding the attempt to ban pink.

The coroner’s report indicated Brooks had a significant blood alcohol content and injuries aligned with sexual assault when she died. Desmond Carter, taken into custody at 17, was among the group who interacted with Brooks on her last night at Reggie’s Bar in Tigerland. Authorities report that Carter, along with others, took Brooks to a parking lot where she was allegedly raped. Post-incident, Brooks attempted to go home, giving incorrect addresses, before being let out near a subdivision. It was here she wandered into the street and was hit by a car. The car’s driver, who stayed on scene, faced no charges.

Ashley Baustert, Brooks’ mother, remarked that her daughter felt safe but was met with selfish choices that night, leading to devastating consequences. She shared these sentiments with Fox News Digital.

Fox News Digital pursued comment from attorney Fowlkes. For further story inquiries, Fox’s Adam Sabes can be contacted directly.
