A sinkhole near a runway at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport caused flight disruptions on Wednesday. Several flights were canceled after crews found the sinkhole during a routine check.
The discovery occurred at 11 a.m., close to Runway 4/22, as part of the airport’s daily airfield inspection, according to officials.
The runway was immediately shut down, and emergency construction and engineering crews are onsite to determine the cause and complete necessary repairs as quickly and safely as possible,
stated LaGuardia’s official communication channel.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey maintained communication with airlines, providing continuous updates. Travelers were advised to contact their airlines for the latest flight information, as delays and cancellations were reported. Expected thunderstorms on Wednesday posed additional risks for more travel issues.
By Wednesday afternoon, departures and arrivals at LaGuardia experienced average delays of 30 minutes and 38 minutes, respectively, as recorded by FlightAware.
