Senior linebacker Colton Zvonar prepares for a bittersweet season as the era of Zvonar family football at Lincoln-Way East potentially comes to a close. His father, Rob Zvonar, has been the team’s sole head coach throughout its history. This season marks Rob’s last opportunity to coach his sons, with Colton being the youngest of the Zvonar brothers to play under his father’s guidance.
Colton reflects on the moment, saying, “It’s been three years but really my whole life in the making. I’ve always known I’ll be the last one going out and he could possibly go out with me.” While aiming for a state championship, they both cherish the daily moments of this final season.
While retirement looms for Rob, he remains focused on the current season. He stated, “I haven’t dwelled on it or thought about it too much. I’ll make a decision after the season is over.” His emphasis is on staying present and dedicating attention to the current group of players.
Colton, a three-year starter, will play a pivotal role as a leader for the Griffins. Ranked third in the Daily Southtown preseason rankings, Rob describes Colton as “the quarterback of the defense.” Commanding on and off the field, Colton exemplifies a coach’s kid with a keen understanding of the game.
Rob pushes Colton in areas where he seeks improvement, something Colton appreciates despite the occasional difficulty. “The most fun thing is I’ve been around it for so long,” Colton remarked. “If he makes a call, I can communicate it to everyone.” The challenges are embraced, others asking him about life outside of football: “People always ask, ‘How is it at home?’ It’s perfectly normal outside of football. It’s great.”
Senior defensive back Charlie Palmer, committed to Central Michigan, recognizes Colton’s exceptional football acumen, noting his deep familiarity with the team’s defensive strategies since sophomore year. Palmer stated, “He’s the best leader and he’s always making sure all the linebackers know their jobs.”
Colton acknowledges his growth in physical strength, entering his senior year with an enhanced toughness: “Freshman and into sophomore year, I was a little soft. I think I’ve made some big improvements physically and gotten stronger.”
The Griffins face the season as underdogs, lacking the star power seen in previous years. Colton finds this advantageous, asserting, “We’re more the underdog this year…I think we’re going to be a scrappy team.” He believes team chemistry and coordination will be vital.
If Rob’s last season does indeed come to pass, it serves as motivation for Colton and his teammates. “With the great career he’s had, why not make it one more great year?” Colton said, determined to honor his father’s legacy.
