Mexican officials have rejected Royal Caribbean’s plan to construct a large water park on the country’s Caribbean coast. The decision comes after criticism from local residents and environmental activists who voiced concerns about the potential harm to Mahahual’s delicate ecosystem.
Mexico’s Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources, Alicia Bárcena, confirmed the rejection at a press conference, stating, “Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day project will not be approved.” The company is also considering withdrawing the project.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized the ecological importance of the area, particularly for its reefs, during a recent press conference. A Royal Caribbean spokesperson expressed disappointment but acknowledged the significance of Mahahual and its environmental qualities.
“Mahahual is a special place that deserves care and protection,” the spokesperson said. “We continue to believe in Mexico and are optimistic about future responsible investments.”
The proposed development included plans for a water park, pools, beaches, restaurants, and bars, aiming to launch in 2027. However, a petition opposing the project garnered over 4.8 million signatures, stressing the impact on local communities and their way of life.
According to the petition, Mahahual is a fishing town where residents have a longstanding connection to the sea. The area is one of the few coastal regions not dominated by commercial tourism.
CocoCay in the Bahamas, also operated by Royal Caribbean, serves as a precedent, attracting over two million visitors annually. Despite mixed reactions from cruise enthusiasts, many applaud Mexico’s decision to protect Mahahual’s unique environment.
The town’s proximity to the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system globally, has made it a popular site for scuba diving and marine tourism. The region boasts diverse coral formations and aquatic life.
