Donna Mills, best known for her role in “Knots Landing,” recently sparked media attention following her bold reply to an Instagram user who commented on her appearance. At 85, Mills uploaded a video responding to remarks about her wearing “too much makeup for your age.”
In the video, Mills initially appeared in her typical glamorous look. She then briefly transformed into an elderly woman stereotype with gray hair, pearls, and wire-rimmed glasses. She lightheartedly questioned, “Did you want me to look like this? Sorry, not sorry,” before returning to her original appearance. Mills confidently asserted, “I like the way I look. This is my style, and style doesn’t have an expiration date.”
The video gained significant traction online, earning over 125,000 likes and receiving praise from fans and celebrities such as Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Nancy Sinatra. On the “Tamron Hall Show,” Mills spoke about why she addressed the comment. She explained the issue extended beyond personal appearance and touched on broader societal views about women and age.
“It’s not just about me,” Mills stated. “It’s about women in general and how they feel about themselves.” She expressed surprise at the video going viral but was appreciative that her message about aging and confidence resonated widely.
Mills emphasized the importance of challenging outdated notions about age, noting, “It just seems to me that they have been hearing it for many years. And it’s a new age now. We’re living longer, healthier lives.” She insisted that reaching a certain age does not signal an end, but rather a continuation of life with newfound opportunities.
On self-image, Mills noted, “When you look good and you know you look good, you feel good.” She acknowledged moments of self-doubt but maintained confidence by addressing perceived imperfections.
Mills’ reaction to her viral fame included an Instagram post expressing disbelief but gratitude for the attention. She humorously stated, “If you told me at 85 I’d be going viral on social media, I wouldn’t have believed you…but here we are.”
The actress continues to be active in the acting world, with her next role as Dr. Karen Carden in the upcoming thriller “Abused.” The film is anticipated to release this summer.
