Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., recently expressed his endorsement for a temporary agreement with Iran following President Donald Trump’s announcement of an almost-completed deal with Tehran. Massie, a vocal critic of U.S. military actions abroad, connected his support for the agreement to rising fuel and farming expenses impacting Americans.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Massie emphasized the financial strain that his constituents are facing. “Gas is almost $5 a gallon. Diesel is almost $6 a gallon, and the farmers here in Kentucky can’t afford the fertilizer to put on their fields,” he stated. He noted that Kentucky families and farmers were already feeling the economic burden from the ongoing conflict.
The Kentucky Republican defended his voting record after losing his Republican primary, arguing his independent approach in Washington led to his political downfall. Massie, who has served seven terms in Congress, maintained that his commitment to reading bills and voting independently rather than aligning strictly with party lines cost him politically.
Massie claimed that his efforts to work collaboratively with figures like Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna made him a target. “The biggest crime I committed against the swamp was showing the American people that somebody on the right could join somebody on the left and get something done,” Massie remarked. Following his primary defeat, he reiterated that his principles and constituents took precedence over party loyalty.
Massie also criticized the influence of outside spending, claiming it led to his defeat. “They couldn’t buy my vote in 14 years, so they bought this seat,” he said, referring to what he described as the most expensive race in congressional primary history.
He warned that Republicans may encounter political repercussions during the approaching midterms, as discontent grows within Trump’s political base. “There’s a growing number of people on the right who have a form of TDS—Trump disappointment syndrome,” he explained, indicating frustration from various factions.
Massie voiced concern about GOP leadership’s stance on government spending, particularly in opposition to funding Trump-backed projects. “The ballroom, I mean that is such an egregious waste of money,” he criticized, pointing out the proposed White House ballroom project as fiscally irresponsible.
Highlighting economic worries, Massie insisted that excessive federal spending and international commitments are detrimental. “We’re operating like a Roman Empire,” he declared, underscoring the financial difficulties faced by citizens.
President Trump recently communicated on Truth Social that a deal with Iran was nearing completion, although no official details were available at the time. Efforts to obtain comments from Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Lindsey Graham were unsuccessful.
