Democrats need to acknowledge a significant issue. The Republican strategy for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has faltered, but so has the Democratic approach. The party has shown unwavering support for Israeli governments, even as their actions conflict with American interests and values.
For decades, Democrats have advocated for a two-state solution. However, they have not used their influence effectively to make it happen. It is time to leverage support to end the occupation and establish two states with complete political and legal rights for everyone. This involves reconsidering taxpayer support for Israel and setting conditions on arms sales.
A growing number of colleagues understand that the current situation is untenable. Recently, 40 Democrats voted against transferring certain military equipment to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. This number has increased from only 15 last April.
Supporting Israel’s security needs is essential. However, Democrats have too often accepted Israel’s reasoning that American weapons are solely for defense. It is necessary to confront the reality that Israel has used its power not only defensively but also offensively to undermine the two-state solution and promote a “Greater Israel.”
The facts are clear: Violent settlers in the West Bank attack Palestinians without consequences, and Israeli security forces are increasingly involved. Israel’s de facto annexation of the West Bank confines Palestinians to smaller spaces. Netanyahu’s government has undermined the Palestinian Authority, which opposes Hamas and recognizes Israel’s right to statehood. The situation in the West Bank under Israeli occupation resembles an apartheid system.
Gaza remains devastated, with a dire humanitarian crisis, and Hamas retains its arms. The author has personally witnessed these changes, visiting Israel and the West Bank multiple times. Illegal settlements rapidly expand into land intended for a Palestinian state. Palestinian families are displaced from their homes and land. Both Israelis and Palestinians have suffered personal losses due to violence.
In Ramallah, conversations with Palestinian American parents reveal a lack of justice for their children killed by settlers or Israeli forces. Aid trucks are stopped at Israeli checkpoints, while children in Gaza face starvation. The once lively city of Rafah has been turned to ruins by the Israel Defense Forces using American weapons and machinery.
