Religious Leaders and AI
Pope Leo XIV, known for his criticism of immigration policies and war, has now addressed the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). He challenges American tech giants, particularly those in Silicon Valley, urging a moral approach to AI development.
Introducing Magnifica Humanitas
Leo’s new document, titled “Magnifica Humanitas” or “Magnificent Humanity,” marks a significant theological stance on AI from a religious perspective. Released on Monday, it stands as a critical moral statement of his papacy, aiming to infuse Catholic values into the secular tech industry.
“Crucial questions impose themselves on our conscience and can no longer be avoided: Where are we going? Toward what goal do we wish to orient ourselves? What direction should we choose as a people and as a human community?”
These questions are central to Leo’s discourse. He stresses the importance of directing AI development with ethical considerations at the forefront.
A Call for Disarmament
In his speech at the Vatican, the Pope drew parallels between AI and nuclear weapons, advocating for the “disarmament” of AI. He calls for AI to be free from becoming a tool of domination or exclusion.
The document was unveiled with considerable fanfare at the synod hall, featuring promotional materials and a video by EWTN, a globally recognized Catholic network.
The Pope’s message arrives amid growing concerns about the potential risks of AI and aligns with ongoing discussions about ethical AI in the tech community.
