L’Oca d’Oro’s Pay-What-You-Want Nights Offer Dining Accessibility

1 month ago 0

L’Oca d’Oro, an Italian eatery in Austin, Texas, allows guests to pay what they wish for their meals once a week. This unique offer attracts varied customers, like Zayed Al-Hamad, who brings his family for an upscale meal without the typical cost. ‘We don’t often dine somewhere nice, but this is an opportunity to enjoy it without spending $150,’ Al-Hamad shared.

Others like Armand Daniels and Robin Wiley discovered the promotion on Instagram, using it for a special Valentine’s date. ‘We didn’t have a great Valentine’s Day, but this is still awesome,’ Daniels said.

The initiative began under the guidance of owners Adam Orman and Fiore Tedesco III. They wanted to counter rising food costs, labor shortages, and tariffs that affected the restaurant. ‘Dining out should be accessible for everyone,’ Orman stated, emphasizing the importance of experiencing hospitality.

The pay-what-you-want policy applies to food, with drinks charged at full price. A 20% service fee is included to support staff wages and benefits. Orman and Tedesco acknowledge that this strategy might seem ineffective, but they view it as essential during challenging times. Tedesco noted, ‘We could raise prices, but this is for everyone.’

Many Americans now prefer takeout due to higher dine-out costs. A YouGov report found 37% dine out less, and the National Restaurant Association reported three out of four meals are takeouts. Anthropologist Hanna Garth highlights the social value of dining out, where even small interactions create community belonging.

Regulars or event-goers like Erin Weber and Michelle Valencia enjoy their time at L’Oca d’Oro. Valencia, who works in public health, appreciates the accessible pricing.

The restaurant reports increased attendance on typically slow nights, despite earning less than standard prices. Some patrons pay full, like Chris Ortiz and Rickyann Ramos, who wish to help others by contributing fully.

For Al-Hamad, the offer brings both enjoyment and guilt. He plans to support more as his finances improve. ‘Hopefully, I can help these businesses continue such initiatives,’ he said, grateful for a rare, affordable, quality dining experience.
