Last May, a man and child left the Annandale Immigration Court in Virginia. This scene is part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration aimed at influencing immigrants to depart the United States voluntarily through financial pressure.
The strategy targets noncitizens, even those with legal status, encouraging them to leave. For nearly 30 years, Raquel Molina, an immigrant from El Salvador, maintained her employment cleaning airplanes at Boston’s Logan International Airport. She held a valid Social Security number and work authorization in the U.S.
However, last summer, Molina, at 65, lost her $19.75-per-hour job. She and numerous other longstanding Logan workers faced dismissals. According to a lawsuit presented by a labor union in federal court, the Trump administration decided that only U.S. citizens and more permanent residents should access secure airport areas.
“I didn’t understand what was going on,” explained Ms. Molina, who lived legally in the United States under Temporary Protected Status. “I had worked hard at my job. This news put me in a state of shock.”
Molina’s firing symbolizes a larger, meticulously organized effort by President Trump’s administration to deter immigration. For over a year, officials have utilized every available mechanism to disconnect immigrants, whether documented or not, from employment, healthcare, financial services, tax credits, and childcare resources.
The administration aims to persuade immigrants to leave the country and aims to diminish the motivations that attract many to immigrate to the U.S. The initiative highlights the president’s ability to alter immigration policy through executive orders and federal regulations, bypassing Congress. These tactics, less conspicuous and more creative, emerged after criticisms of militarized deportation raids in earlier months.
