Matt Ryan, the new president of football for the Atlanta Falcons, is actively involved in efforts to revitalize the team. Ryan holds the top football executive position with the Falcons, sitting just above new general manager Ian Cunningham. As a former Falcons quarterback, Ryan has taken an unexpected and hands-on role during the offense’s organized team activities (OTAs). According to ESPN’s Marc Raimondi, Ryan is providing an additional arm to throw to the receivers during practices.
Wide receiver Jahan Dotson, who joined the team through free agency, expressed his surprise and excitement about catching passes from Ryan. “I honestly had no idea [he’d be doing that],” Dotson shared. “It’s pretty cool. Having the legend of Atlanta out here, participating, throwing, and running individual drills is always fun. He’s a great guy, a cool person to learn the game from and pick his brain.”
The Falcons currently have four quarterbacks on their 90-man roster: Michael Penix Jr., Tua Tagovailoa, Trevor Siemian, and Jack Strand. Penix and Tagovailoa are expected to engage in a competitive quarterback battle during training camp. Penix, a first-round pick in 2024, is recovering from an ACL injury and is not yet cleared for team drills but participates in 7-on-7 throwing drills.
Ryan’s presence as an additional arm in practice and his 2016 MVP experience benefit the Falcons, particularly in the quarterback battle. New head coach Kevin Stefanski values Ryan’s contributions. “Obviously, he helps me every day, helps our players,” Stefanski remarked. “He has a unique history, both in the city and this building. He sat in those chairs. It’s special when he can offer his perspective, having reached the pinnacle of this profession and now guiding this franchise.”
Last season, the Falcons missed the playoffs with an 8-9 record, tying with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and trailing the NFC South-winning Carolina Panthers. This fall, the division remains open. While Ryan won’t be throwing passes to secure a playoff spot, his expertise is playing a vital role in making the team more competitive this offseason.
