Israeli Forces Capture Beaufort Castle Amid Renewed Conflict

1 month ago 0

Israeli troops recently took control of Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon. This strategic site lies on a hilltop and offers views of southern Lebanon and northern Israel. The capture marks part of a significant military expansion by Israel in Lebanon.

Video footage shows the Israeli flag on the 900-year-old castle. Black smoke rose from the nearby town of Arnoun. The conflict has led to extensive damage in several villages, indicating Israel’s intention to maintain a prolonged presence.

The castle, first held by Israel during an 18-year occupation ending in 2000, is again a focal point of conflict with Hezbollah, an Iranian-supported group. Israel has boosted ground operations and increased airstrikes while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened decisive action against Hezbollah. A U.S.-brokered ceasefire still technically stands, yet tensions threaten diplomatic efforts involving the U.S. and Iran to end the broader conflict.

Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Israeli soldiers would maintain a presence at Beaufort Castle as part of a security zone. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the invasion, alleging that Israel’s tactics would not yield security but exacerbate conflicts with the Lebanese populace.

Israel’s military actions in southern Lebanon have displaced over 1.2 million people. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported over 3,300 deaths, with women, children, and first responders among the casualties. In comparison, Hezbollah attacks have resulted in the deaths of two Israeli civilians and 23 soldiers.

Salam called for immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli forces, emphasizing negotiations to protect Lebanon. Despite the persistent state of war between Israel and Lebanon, dialogue continues in Washington.

Israel reports Hezbollah is using the castle for attacks, highlighting its strategic significance nine miles from the Israeli border. Israeli operations have also intensified in Nabatiyeh, over 20 miles from the border. Katz emphasized Israel’s aim to dismantle threats to its citizens.

Lebanon’s culture minister noted the castle endured direct damage from an Israeli strike prior to its capture. Israel’s military efforts include sending troops and launching numerous strikes, while Hezbollah’s retaliatory actions encompass drone attacks that have claimed Israeli lives.

The United Nations recorded over 3,300 Israeli projectiles and airstrikes from May 24-30, against 187 Hezbollah-launched projectiles. Netanyahu announced that Israeli forces have crossed the Litani River, indicating their advance roughly 20 miles into southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah was created by Iran in the 1980s to counter Israeli actions in Lebanon. The group receives ongoing support from Iran, which insists peace must address conflicts in both Lebanon and Iran. Netanyahu demanded continued military actions against Hezbollah, emphasizing the need for ongoing operations until objectives are met. Discussions between Israeli and Lebanese military representatives at the Pentagon aimed to bolster the fragile ceasefire, although no progress was reported.
