Preview of the Obama Presidential Center Opening

4 weeks ago 0

The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s Jackson Park prepares to welcome the public. A grand opening is planned for June 19, following a dedication event the day before. The Obama Foundation has not yet disclosed guest performers for the ceremony, which will be streamed at a neighborhood watch party and online.

Inside the Museum

The museum comprises four floors, culminating in the ‘Sky Room’ with wide-ranging views. The first floor highlights progressive movements preceding Barack Obama, focusing on labor, voting rights, the New Deal, and cultural shifts from the 1960s to the 1980s. Exhibits candidly address opposition to racial progress and economic disparities.

Chicago is prominently featured throughout, especially on the first floor with references to Jane Addams, Harold Washington, and the early careers of Barack and Michelle Obama. Local political enthusiasts might find less emphasis on Obama’s days in the Illinois legislature and his political campaigns.

Obama appears in videos throughout the exhibit, which includes a wall of campaign buttons, school essays, and a timeline of his first presidential campaign. A small panel notes the racist backlash against the couple, including false claims about Obama’s birthplace and caricatures of Michelle Obama.

The second floor covers his presidency, focusing on the auto bailout, financial crisis, Affordable Care Act, and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Video installations feature interviews with officials like Elizabeth Warren and Austan Goolsbee, alongside letters from constituents. Text boxes highlight economic reforms left unfinished.

The floor also has interactive sections on American democracy. The third floor includes family-friendly displays, such as a replica Oval Office, the first lady’s dresses, sports memorabilia, foreign gifts, and miniatures of White House events.

The fourth floor explores efforts on various rights and reforms. It features a story booth and digital button-design station.
