Drone Strike Highlights Dangers Near Romania’s Border

1 month ago 0

When a drone crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania, residents faced the reality of war next door. The incident in Galati served as a stark reminder of the risks associated with the nearby Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Residents in this region frequently receive warnings of potential threats. These alerts, often ignored due to their regularity, came in the form of noisy phone notifications about “falling objects from the surrounding airspace.” Many residents had grown accustomed to these alarms, viewing them as unnecessary disruptions.

Andra Lupsa, a 38-year-old resident, shared her experience from that night. Used to the alerts, she set her phone to silent mode before sleeping. However, her husband’s phone, which was left on, sounded an alarm shortly after 1 a.m. She initially dismissed it as just another routine warning. But moments later, a Russian drone struck a nearby building with a loud crash.

Galati, one of the largest cities in eastern Romania, had suddenly become the site of a frightening event. Ms. Lupsa and others in the area were forced to reconsider the seriousness of these alerts, realizing that their routine could quickly turn deadly.

Windows in the building were shattered, and an evacuation followed. This incident caught the attention of not only the residents but also the Romanian government and NATO officials. The unexpected danger underscored the proximity of the conflict and the potential for escalation into Romanian territory.
