Apple TV’s New Cape Fear: A Fresh Take on a Classic Story

The Apple TV series Cape Fear revives the tense storyline of a man, recently out of prison, terrorizing his former legal defender. This new 10-part miniseries, premiering on June 5, relates to the 1957 novel by John D. MacDonald.

The original Cape Fear movie from 1962 featured Robert Mitchum as the menacing ex-convict Max Cady, and Gregory Peck as attorney Sam Bowden. Mitchum’s portrayal of Cady as an articulate sociopath influenced many film characters afterward. Javier Bardem’s roles in No Country for Old Men and Billy Bob Thornton’s eccentric character in Fargo are notable examples. In the 1991 remake directed by Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro embodied Cady, bringing a charismatic yet threatening presence, especially in scenes with Bowden’s daughter, played by Juliette Lewis.
