California Ballot Count Ongoing: Potential Changes in Key Races

4 weeks ago 0

An estimated 3.6 million ballots remain uncounted in California’s primary election, primarily from vote-by-mail ballots. These ballots could significantly impact outcomes in several unresolved races. Currently, around 5.6 million ballots have been processed. In Los Angeles County alone, approximately 700,000 ballots still need counting.

According to voting guidelines, mail ballots postmarked on or before election day must be received by the county elections officials within seven days to be counted. County officials update the secretary of state daily until all ballots are counted. Election observers have advised patience, stressing that a deliberate count ensures accuracy and integrity.

“We allow people lots of different avenues to vote, and as a result it takes longer to count up all the votes,” said Jessica Levinson, law professor at Loyola Marymount University. “And that’s how it should be. It’s an argument in favor of making sure the process runs correctly — not quickly.”

Gubernatorial Race Updates

In the governor’s race, Republican Steve Hilton maintains a narrow lead with 27%, followed by Democrats Xavier Becerra at 26% and Tom Steyer with 20%. Los Angeles County, with 688,000 votes remaining to be processed, is set to release more results shortly. The top two candidates will proceed to the general election in November.

Despite Hilton’s lead, the Associated Press has not yet declared a winner, indicating the fluid nature of the race. As vote counts progress, the dynamics may shift significantly.

Los Angeles Mayoral Race

For the Los Angeles mayoral race, incumbent Mayor Karen Bass has secured a place on the November ballot. However, the challenger remains uncertain, with reality TV personality Spencer Pratt in second place and City Councilmember Nithya Raman trailing closely. Although Pratt has claimed victory, the race remains too close to call until all votes are counted.

Orange County Congressional Races

In Orange County, a clearer picture of the electoral landscape is emerging for congressional districts 42, 45, and 47. The results will be pivotal in shaping representation in these areas come November.

Fraud Allegations and Election Integrity

While Republican candidate Steve Hilton has acknowledged no immediate signs of impropriety, he remains vigilant. Concurrently, former President Trump has made unproven claims of election fraud, a recurring theme that raises concerns among election officials and voters alike.

Legislative Measures Affecting Elections

In Shasta County, early results show support for Measure B, a sweeping initiative aimed at altering the local election process, including voter ID requirement and stringent in-person voting rules. This measure, if passed, faces criticisms and potential legal challenges for potentially violating multiple election laws.

Uncounted Ballots and Their Impact

With millions of ballots still uncounted, the influence of these remaining votes will shape election outcomes across several key races. Political analysts suggest that as the vote-by-mail ballots are accounted for, results may increasingly favor Democratic candidates.
