A strong wave of opposition is building against plans for a new data center next to the Nashville Zoo. A petition initiated by the zoo has gathered nearly 37,000 signatures. The petition raises concerns about potential harm to animals, local resources, and the environment.
Hosted on Change.org, the petition calls for Nashville’s city leaders to disallow the data center proposal. The center, planned by DC Blox, a Georgia-based developer, would sit on land adjacent to the zoo.
Community Concerns
The opposition highlights the potential risks of such a development. These risks include disruptions to wildlife habitats, energy consumption, and strain on local resources. DC Blox plans a 69,000-square-foot facility on the site. Zoo spokesperson Leah Trice emphasizes the potential for environmental impact stating, “Data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity and water; straining power grids, depleting resources, and damaging our watershed.”
The zoo worries about noise pollution and light pollution affecting the animals. These concerns are tied to the zoo’s conservation efforts, particularly regarding species like clouded leopards.
The Petition’s Goals
“Our biggest concerns about the data center being built are the negative environmental and public health impacts these centers are known to cause,” said Trice.
Residents around the zoo express similar fears, citing disruptions to their community and natural habitat. “I live by the backside of the zoo property. I love hearing the gibbons hooting in the day,” one petitioner commented.
The Nashville Zoo hosts 3,000 animals and attracts 1.4 million visitors each year, highlighting the importance of maintaining a stable environment.
Developer’s Position
DC Blox argues that the data center could provide economic and infrastructure benefits to Nashville. “The project would provide much-needed digital infrastructure and represents substantial investment,” the company noted.
They assure that the facility will not burden local resources, committing to environmentally friendly cooling methods and noise control.
Looking Ahead
As the project awaits necessary permits, the zoo and its supporters continue to rally public opposition. “We are confident that public support will help prevent this center’s construction,” said Trice.
The ongoing debate reflects a broader discussion about the location and impact of data centers, particularly near conservation sites.
